Distilled mindfulness

United States of William (USWM)

If there is no joy, ease, or lightness in what you are doing, it does not necessarily mean that you need to change what you are doing. It may be sufficient to change the how. "How" is always more important than what." See if you can give much more attention to the doing than to the result that you want to achieve through it. Give your fullest attention to whatever the moment presents. This implies that you also completely accept what is, because you cannot give your full attention to something and at the same time resist it.

Ekhart Tolle — The Power Of Now

This is one of my favorite bits from Tolle's book. My way was not out of the ordinary by any stretch of the imagination but whilst the simple act of tying my shoe I realized that the act of doing so, that is to say the act of tying your shoe is the easiest way to practice mindfulness and to understand what he is referring to the above quote. The things we put on auto-pilot are some of the things we might need to pay attention to a little more to remind ourselves that everything is just as it should be.
